How Do Boxing Odds Work?

Boxing being a popular sports betting game has many betting types. Each type has its own rules and odds are calculated accordingly. Here are the most famous boxing odds types that every beginner needs to know:

Moneyline:

To make a money line bet, you would need to pick an outright winner. Odds for this kind of bet would look something like this in an example:

Creed: -160

Balboa: +130

The favorites are always represented with the minus sign (-) in the money line. Whereas underdogs are always shown with the plus sign (+). This is consistent across every sport from football to the UFC. In this bet, Creed is the favorite and Rocky is the underdog.

Prop Betting:

These are bets made on the occurrence or non-occurrence of certain events or milestones that do not relate to the final outcome of the fight. All popular sports have prop betting options. And boxing is no behind. The most common boxing prop is the method of success. Instead of betting on the fighter you think will win, you wage upon how the fight will end.

Using the same Rocky vs Creed example from above, instead of betting on Creed to win, you could bet on him to win by knockout (KO). Odds would appear like:

Apollo Creed by KO +120

Other boxing proposition bets can be:

  •  Will there be a knockdown?
  •  Will the fight go the distance?
  •  Is there going to be a point deduction?
  •  Would the fight go to a decision?

Total Rounds:

This involves betting on the number of rounds a fight will go. You basically bet upon how long the fight would last. You’ll see action that looks something like this:

 Wilder vs Tyson

OVER 11.5 rounds

UNDER 11.5 rounds

If you think the fight will finish within 11.5 rounds, you would bet the UNDER. If you think the fight will go above 11.5 rounds, you would bet upon the OVER.

On-Points Betting:

Boxers are judged on a 10 point scale in professional boxing. Most rounds will end 10-9 for the winning boxer. If the round is a draw, both fighters get 10. Boxers lose points every time they are knocked down. If both fighters get knocked down, they cancel out each other and the points are redone. Intentional fouls also result in minus points, and in some cases, unintentional fouls can also cause a boxer to lose a score. This type of bet is like the point spread in other sports. Thus, you would need to guess which fighter has the highest chances of winning and by how much they’d win.

Keep the Record in Mind

Boxing is such a thrilling sport yet, it comes down to one number — the number of losses a boxer has. Seeing an “O” in the loss column makes a fighter that much more marketable. Certainly, casual bettors will be drawn to the boxer with a better record. However, when you’re comparing two fighters side by side, the record doesn’t tell the entire story. Looking at how a boxer competed against similar opponents or against tough opponents gives you a better idea of just how good he or she is.
